Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 teaspoons baking powder
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
– 4 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– Red and blue food coloring
– 2 cups buttercream frosting
Instructions
1. – Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
2. – In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
3. – In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
4. – Divide the batter evenly into three bowls. Tint one bowl with red food coloring and one with blue food coloring, leaving the third bowl plain.
5. – Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
6. – Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
7. – Place the red cake layer on a serving platter. Top with half of the buttercream frosting. Add the white cake layer and top with the remaining frosting. Finish with the blue cake layer.
8. – Refrigerate the cake for at least 2 hours before serving.
Notes
For a more vibrant color, use gel food coloring. You can also add a teaspoon of patriotic sprinkles between the cake layers for extra flair.
