Description

Indulge in the classic flavors of Mardi Gras with this irresistible Traditional King Cake (Brioche Style). Featuring a soft, pillowy brioche base, a vibrant sugar glaze, and a festive, colorful topping, this easy-to-make recipe will transport you straight to the heart of New Orleans.

Ingredients

– 3 1/4 cups (390g) all-purpose flour

– 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 standard packet) active dry yeast

– 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk

– 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened

– 2 large eggs

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

– Green, purple, and gold sanding sugar for topping

Instructions

1. 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Create a well in the center.

2. 2. Pour the warm milk, softened butter, eggs, and vanilla extract into the well. Using a wooden spoon or your hands, mix the ingredients until a shaggy dough forms.

3. 3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

4. 4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

5. 5. Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough into a long rope, then shape it into a ring, pinching the ends together to seal.

6. 6. Place the ring on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for an additional 30 minutes.

7. 7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C).

8. 8. Bake the king cake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

9. 9. Allow the cake to cool completely before glazing.

10. 10. Prepare the glaze by mixing together powdered sugar and a small amount of milk or water until it reaches a pourable consistency.

11. 11. Pour the glaze over the top of the king cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.

12. 12. Immediately sprinkle the green, purple, and gold sanding sugar over the top of the glazed cake.

13. 13. Serve and enjoy your Traditional King Cake (Brioche Style)!

Notes

For an extra festive touch, you can hide a small plastic baby figurine inside the cake before baking. The person who receives the slice with the baby is said to have good luck for the year.
