Description

Molasses Brown Soda Bread is a classic Irish quick bread that’s easy to make and bursting with rich, comforting flavor. This no-fail recipe delivers a moist, tender crumb and a crunchy crust in just 5 minutes of prep time.

Ingredients

– 2 cups whole wheat flour

– 1 teaspoon baking soda

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1 cup buttermilk

– 1/4 cup molasses

Instructions

1. 1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9-inch round baking pan.

2. 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

3. 3. Pour in the buttermilk and molasses, and stir just until a shaggy dough forms.

4. 4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly, about 1 minute, until it comes together.

5. 5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place in the prepared baking pan.

6. 6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

7. 7. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature buttermilk. You can also substitute sour cream or plain yogurt for the buttermilk. Serve Molasses Brown Soda Bread warm, with butter, honey, or your favorite spread.
