Savor the classic Easter treat with a twist! These fragrant Hot Cross Buns infused with the warm spice of cardamom are a comforting and irresistible bake.
Ingredients
– 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
– 1 tablespoon (12g) granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
– 1 tablespoon (10g) ground cardamom
– 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
– 1 cup (240ml) warm milk
– 4 tablespoons (56g) unsalted butter, melted
– 1 large egg
– 1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
– 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon (15ml) water, for egg wash
Instructions
1. – In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom. Mix well.
2. – In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk.
3. – Add the melted butter, egg, and vanilla to the yeast mixture, and stir to combine.
4. – Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.
5. – Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
6. – Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
7. – Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth bun.
8. – Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
9. – Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
10. – Brush the buns with the egg wash and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
11. – Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a more traditional look, you can pipe a cross on the buns using a simple icing or glaze. The cardamom can be adjusted to taste, depending on your preference for the spice level.
