Description
Sink your teeth into the irresistible crunch of Grandma’s classic Fried Green Tomatoes. This timeless Southern recipe delivers a perfect balance of tangy and savory flavors, making it a beloved appetizer or side dish.
Ingredients
– 4 large green tomatoes, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rounds
– 1 cup all-purpose flour
– 1 cup cornmeal
– 2 large eggs, beaten
– 1/2 cup milk
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
1. 1. Pat the tomato slices dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt and pepper.
2. 2. Set up three shallow dishes: one with the flour, one with the cornmeal, and one with the beaten eggs mixed with milk.
3. 3. Dredge the tomato slices in the flour, then dip them in the egg mixture, and finally coat them in the cornmeal.
4. 4. In a large skillet, heat 1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
5. 5. Fry the breaded tomato slices in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
6. 6. Drain the fried tomatoes on a paper towel-lined plate and serve hot, with a side of remoulade sauce for dipping.
Notes
For extra crispiness, let the breaded tomato slices rest for 10-15 minutes before frying. You can also try using panko breadcrumbs instead of cornmeal for a lighter, crunchier texture.
